The Crossover

We used the same precision in the development of our crossovers as we did with the rest of the RS Audio

components.  The importance of the crossover is often underestimated.

Before the signal reaches the loudspeaker it must first pass through the crossover.  The purpose of the crossover is to divide the frequencies between the tweeter and the low/midbass driver not to degrade the signal.  It is not the number of elements in a crossover that is important, rather the quality of the elements used.  With each additional element there is an additional loss in the signal path affecting the dynamic response, spaciousness, and richness of detail.

A steep cut-off slope also causes many problems.  The phase relationship between drivers is no longer accurate; the system does not play as a single unit and the music seams to stick to the individual drivers resulting in unacceptable staging and spaciousness.  These conditions are far from ideal for a true car hi-fi system.  To avoid these problems we have chosen a simple 6-dB/Oct. crossover containing ¡°no compromise¡± elements throughout.

All of the RS Audio crossovers have solder eyelet connections.  Soldered connections are less susceptible to the corrosion that is inherent in the humid environment of the automobile.  Crimp or screw type connections become corroded after time raising the overall resistance and negatively affecting the signal transfer.

The Low/Midbass Driver

A quality low/midbass driver has to be fast enough to reproduce the music in real time.  To achieve this, the motor structure and cone must work in harmony.  It is important that the cone is as light yet as rigid as possible.  Therefore we have chosen carbon fiber, which is well known for its strength and lightweight, as our cone material.  To achieve an even stiffer cone we cast it with a single fold around the circumference.

Although it is impossible to produce a loudspeaker with a perfectly flat frequency response, our goal was to develop a low/midbass driver that has a clean and linear frequency response as near to the ideal as possible.  This means that we do not need any crossover elements to force the linearity of the frequency response that leads to the loss of transparency and dynamics.

A wide frequency spectrum is also very important to allow the midrange/midbass driver to harmonize with the tweeter.  As a result, the speaker system plays as one unit, producing a stage above the dashboard.

The RS Precision and RS Advance low/midbass driver are assembled from CNC drilled Aluminum parts.  The  RS Pro and RS SPL Series low/midbass drivers are constructed using a special cast aluminum basket.  The RS Base and RS Smart Series low/midbass drivers have stamped steel baskets.  The RS Precision, RS Advance, RS Pro, RS SPL also have larger motor structures and voice coils for increased power handling and performance.

The Tweeter

We also took a different direction in the development of our tweeter; outstanding transparency and a high resolution are the key factors.

Our tweeter (RS Precision, RS Advance, RS Pro, RS SPL) has a resonance enclosure behind the silk dome, which gives it a resonance frequency of about 950Hz, enables better cooling of the voice coil, and minimizes rearward reflections.  The result is a much calmer, more transparent, and higher resolution tweeter than conventional tweeters.

The resonance enclosure also enabled us to forego the use of Ferro fluid, which negatively influences overall dynamic response and transparency.  The excellent heat dispersion of the vented motor structure also allowed us to use a 6-dB/oct. crossover, which harmonizes excellently with the low/midbass driver.

The whole structure of the tweeter is embedded in an aluminum casing (not RS Base, RS Smart), which is not only appealing to the eye, but also adds solidity to the complete high frequency range, because of the added mass and pressure applied to the actual tweeter.  We also provide a high quality silver/copper mix connection cable (RS Pro, RS SPL) adding to the overall quality of the tweeter.
